bed feels sandy

The last place on earth where you want to feel sand is on your bed, especially if you don’t live near the beach or a desert. It should always be free of sand, dirt, or dust. You may be wondering, Why does my bed always feel sandy? Here’s why.

There are a number of possible reasons why your bed feels sandy, and they are as follows:

  • Dust from the HVAC.
  • Dirt from under your feet.
  • Sand is blown in through windows.
  • Crumbs of food lay on your bed.
  • Dirty clothes are messing up your bed.
  • Pets.

Unless you clean regularly, this problem will persist. So, in this article, I’m going to share my list of solutions for a dirty bed and how I keep my bed free of sand, dirt, and dust at all times.

Reasons Why Your Bed Feels Sandy

reasons why your bed is dirty

1. Dust from the HVAC

An HVAC system that hasn’t been cleaned out and maintained has the ability to circulate dust and dirt throughout the house.

If the filter is clogged up with dust and dirt or the air ducts are, then this would explain why your bed feels sandy.

Whenever you have the HVAC working, it’s blowing some of that dirt and dust onto your bed.

2. Dirt from under your feet

Walking barefoot is another reason why your bed feels sandy.

The sweat under your feet acts like a sticky net for all the dirt, sand, and dust on the floors. As you walk around the house, it gets stuck to the heels of your feet.

Then, when you get onto the bed, that dirt and sand rub off onto the bed.

Make it a habit to wear sandals, slippers, or socks indoors.

3. Sand is blown in through windows

If parallel to your bed is a window that is in direct line with a sandy piece of land, then that would explain why your bed feels sandy.

Whenever the windows are open and the weather is windy, some of that sand is blown into your room.

It’s going to land on the floors, on the curtain, and especially on the bed.

Ironically, I learned of this from personal experience. Whenever I’d visit my grandparents’ home for a holiday as a kid, the bed would get really sandy.

While playing video games on the bed one day, I noticed sand had flown in through the windows and hit my skin.

4. Crumbs of food

If you frequently eat on your bed without dusting off any crumbs, then that would be what feels like sand.

Food matures with age. Items that are carbohydrates, like bread, tend to harden with exposure to moisture and dry air.

The longer the crumbs lie on your bed, the harder they become until they feel like sand against your body.

5. Dirty clothes

In the event that you spend a lot of time outside or work in construction, it’s possible that sand and dirt from the crevices of your clothes are falling onto the bed.

It may not be enough to notice at first, but over a prolonged period of time, small quantities of sand and dirt from your clothes accumulate until it feels like your bed is sandy.

6. Pets

If you have pets, then that would be another reason for this problem.

Pets aren’t conscious of what dirt is on their body all the time.

In fact, cats and dogs spend the most time outside and tiny sand particles get lodged into their coat of fur, their tail, or under their paws.

They’re bringing that sand and dirt indoors and then dropping it onto the bed.

Tips For Cleaning A Sandy Bed

tips on cleaning a bed

Vacuum regularly

Nothing beats a good session of vacuuming when it comes to removing dust and dirt from a bed.

Start by vacuuming the sheet, remove it and then vacuum the mattress itself.

In the event that you have a duvet cover on your bed at all times, vacuum that at least once or twice per week but not on a high setting to avoid any damage.

Dust sheets daily

In the event that you do not have a vacuum, clean your bed the tried and trusted way.

Remove the sheet and dust them outside thoroughly. I know that some people choose dust and pat it clean while it remains on the bed but I don’t like transfering that dirt elsewhere in the room.

I remove all four corners and bundle them together to avoid any dirt or sand from falling onto my mattress or floors.

Then, I head outside, hang it onto the line and dust it off.

Wash and change your sheets weekly

To remove any dirt and sand from your sheets and to disinfect them from any germs and bacteria while removing odors, wash your sheets weekly.

Throw it into the washing machine and then hang it outside to dry under the sun and a breeze.

One could argue that you ought to be doing this whether your bed feels sandy or not.

Change HVAC filters

Make it a habit to dust out and clean HVAC filters every two to three months and replace them once a year at minimum.

These filters tend to catch a lot of dirt, dust, sand, and debris over time.

Unless cleaned, that stuff is being circulated through the HVAC.

Not only is it making your bed and floors feel sandy but it’s infecting your air supply. This can trigger sinus issues and other health conditions.

Don’t eat on your bed

To avoid messing your bed with crumbs, staining the sheets, or causing bad odors, don’t eat food on your bed.

It’s unhealthy and is even shown to cause digestive issues.

One should be sitting upright whilst eating and then moving afterwards to improve digestion and to avoid reflux issues.

Also, roaches and other insects are attracted to environments with food crumbs. For this reason, it’s best to not eat on your bed anymore.

How To Clean A Dirty Bed

Start by vacuuming the duvet and sheets

To prevent dirt and dust from flying all over your room, it’s best to lightly vacuum the duvet before removing it.

Thereafter, vacuum the sheet that is fitted into the bed to get rid of the majority of sand, dirt, or dust that’s on it.

Remove the sheets and change your pillowcases

Remove the sheets, bundle it together and head over to the washing machine to clean them.

Your sheets need to be washed regularly to avoid bad odors from dirt, germs, and bacteria.

Since your face lays on pillows for hours at a time, it is of paramount importance to wash or change your pillow cases every 3 – 4 days.

Clean the mattress

Bed bugs and other dirt may accumulate onto the mattress over time.

Make sure to dust the mattress or run the vacuum cleaner over it to remove any residual dist.

Additionally , it’s a good idea to lightly spritz the mattress with a cleaning agent meant for beds and then wipe it dry.

This should kill bed bugs and prevent them from spreading.

Give it some time to air dry.

You can also run the vacuum over it once more to make sure everything, including the cleaning agent, is removed from the mattress.
