The placement of a sink may seem like such an unimportant or superficial detail to fixate on when designing a house. But, as one of the hotspots, it makes sense to consider all the factors that may affect the aesthetic appeal and overall functionality of the kitchen sink. Location is one of those factors. This begs the question: Should a kitchen sink be centered under a window?
I’m going to try to provide a definitive answer to this question as succinctly as I can.
I believe that a kitchen sink should be centered under a window because natural lighting will highlight and brighten the sink area. Furthermore, the encouragement of air flow near the location of the sink will offset or mitigate nasty odors from dirty dishes. Aesthetically, being able to gaze out into the garden or the city while washing dishes can turn a mundane chore into a therapeutic activity that calms you down after a busy day.
These are perhaps the most compelling reasons why a sink should be centered under a window.
It looks good, it provides more natural lighting and clean air, and it’s a welcome distraction while you wash dishes.
There are also minor details that encourage this positioning.
For instance, creating balance or symmetry by aligning a window, sink, and wall is an underrated design feature. If you plan to sell your home someday, alignment issues become a factor that affects the overall pricing and desirability of a property.
Another factor to consider is the practical implications of placing a sink under a window.
Depending on the size of the window, the countertop space may be limited, which could impede the placement of appliances and accessories needed for meal prep and cleaning.
Then there’s the issue of plumbing and ventilation.
Factoring pipes and ducts into the equation is of paramount importance to avoid complications and issues during the installation process of the kitchen sink.
Where Should A Kitchen Sink Be Placed?

As we’ve discussed, the kitchen sink should be placed near a window for the practical and aesthetic benefits attached to this location.
But, there are instances where homeowners could opt for alternative locations that are practical and sensible by considering the size and layout of the kitchen.
For instance, you could place a kitchen sink on a peninsula or an island to have more freedom of movement and space to work with. On an island, you can store a lot of resources and tools below it while having easy access to things around you.
Alternatively, you could place the sink against a wall without windows so that you can mount shelves and racks in front of the sink that make cleaning and storage of dishes and cookware easier and more accessible.
In fact, right now, we have our kitchen sink attached to a wall without a window, with floating cabinets above and ample countertop space on either side of the sink.
To beautify the location, we’ve installed large granite tiles onto the wall to minimize any damage to the wall and to make cleaning simpler.
Parallel to the sink is our kitchen door, which we keep open most of the time.
This allows natural lighting to brighten up the area, thus minimizing the need for artificial lighting despite not having a window on that wall.
You could also place the kitchen sink near the dishwasher for convenience. Being able to switch between the two shouldn’t take time or require you to move across the kitchen.
I’m of the opinion that a kitchen that maximizes functionality and convenience over everything else is the best.
Keep this in mind when deciding where to place a kitchen sink.
Final Thoughts
That brings us to the end of this article on whether a sink should be centered under a window.
Most of the time, the answer to this question will lean towards the affirmative because of the addition of natural lighting, clean air, and the aesthetic value that comes from having a sink under a window.
Consider the size of the kitchen, the space around you, and the plumbing and ventilation system before choosing the ideal location for a sink.
As long as you do that, you should be able to place the kitchen sink in the best possible location.
