We all understand the importance of spare keys, but what we often overlook is accessibility. There’s no point in having a spare key that’s locked in the location that you are trying to access. So it needs to be in a location that you can access, but it should be discreet and well-hidden so that strangers or thieves cannot gain access to your property. Thankfully, I’ve done the work and found out where to hide spare keys after speaking to an operating officer at a security firm who provided some intel.
Where To Hide Spare Keys
1. Lockbox
For spare keys to vehicles or other properties, invest in a secure lockbox or safe that can be hidden in a discreet location, like within a cupboard, under the sink, in a secret desk compartment, or even mounted to a wall behind a frame. I would also encourage you to purchase a combination lockbox for added security.
2. Fake Rock
Granted, if you’ve watched a lot of movies, you’re aware of the fake rock key holder. And yet, despite this knowledge, it still remains a suitable place to hide spare keys. The trick is to use a realistic-looking fake rock with a hidden compartment that is concealed among other similar-looking rocks. People will overlook or get fed up with searching under rocks if there are too many in sight, which is why I prefer this method for homes with a good outdoor environment consisting of gardens or landscapes.
3. Concealed Key Holder
Think of any discreet location on your patio or porch that can double as a key holder for spare keys. It can appear as a fake outdoor electrical outlet, a fake pato light, or an ornament. It should be inconspicuous and paired with something else so that it blends in with the rest of your outdoor decor.
4. Fake Sprinkler
How many people notice an inactive sprinkler buried in the ground? How many people actually assume that a sprinkler is a fake keybox? Not many at all. You can find fake sprinkler keyholders on Amazon for just a few bucks, and they do the trick. In a garden with actual sprinklers, it will blend right in.
5. In A Gutter
If you can attach a key holder to the gutter or inside one that isn’t exposed to a ton of water, it could be the perfect hiding spot for keys.
6. Under a Garden Ornament
Heavy garden ornaments that are placed strategically around your property could be another hiding place for spare keys. It should be well concealed and difficult to move. It would be even better if you placed the spare key inside a combination lock as well, so that if someone did locate it, accessing the spare key would require a code.
7. Inside a pot plant
You could bury the spare key inside a large pot plant, under the soil, and among the roots. In some cases, you could attach the spare key to the base of the pot plant. As long as it’s not visible from the surface and is among many pot plants, it will be a mission to find for anyone with malicious intentions.
8. Outdoor Furniture
Outdoor furniture could be another great place to hide spare keys. It can be placed inside an outdoor cushion or attached to the underside of a table or bench in a small container.
9. Neighbor or Trusted Friend
If you have a good relationship with your neighbor and they are trustworthy, consider sharing the spare key with them. The only downside to this idea is that if they’re not at home or on holiday but you need the spare key, you may not be able to gain access to it until they return.
10. Pet House
A kennel or bird house could be a great location to hide spare keys. As long as it’s packaged safely or concealed in a box that neither pets nor intruders can access, it will be safe and secure.
