how to make your bedroom smell good

My bedroom isn’t just a space for me to sleep and relax. It’s also where I study, write, and work. Spending a lot of time in a room juggling multiple tasks prepares you for all sorts of issues with hygiene and clutter. With sinus issues, unwanted smells and odors are a nightmare for me. But I figured out how to make my bedroom smell good without spending much money.

As you know, cleanliness is a priority. I don’t want to waste your time explaining the obvious, so I’ll just summarize this solution in a few sentences.

The easiest way to make your bedroom smell good is to deep clean.

Here’s how:

Vacuum or mop the floors, dust the walls, wash curtains, pillows, and duvets, change your rugs, and disinfect surfaces.

That’s it.

You don’t need to use fancy equipment, nor do you have to change everything in your bedroom.

Implement a deep cleaning session into your weekly routine, and your room will smell good and be clean for the most part.

On a daily basis, you should be opening the windows and doors to allow cross-ventilation in and out of your room. If your home is equipped with a strong HVAC system, run your bedroom unit to clean the air.

Make sure that the filters are regularly changed because this can contribute to a stuffy and smelly room.

If your bedroom still doesn’t smell good enough for you, then read on, because here’s what I did to level up the air quality and overall scent in my room.

How Do You Want Your Bedroom To Smell? (Types Of Scents)

This is incredibly important. Some people prefer a scent-free environment that smells clean and airy.

Others, like myself, prefer a scent that evokes certain emotions. I love floral and fruity scents that relax me.

These light and fresh smells allow me to focus and feel in tune with nature, which is important because I spend so much time at my bedroom desk.

So what type of scent would you like in your bedroom?

Check out this article by Perfume Direct for a full guide to fragrances.

For your convenience, here’s a list of the different types of scents:

  • Fresh and fruity (light): Citrus-based fragrances like lemon, mandarin, and orange; water-based fragrances like sea spray.
  • Floral (sweet): Sweet and flowery fragrances like cherry blossom, lavender, spearmint, rose, jasmine, and more.
  • Oriental (soft and rich): Spice-infused fragrances like cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla, and more.
  • Woody (deep and strong): Earthy fragrances like cedarwood, amber, sandalwood, and more.

I’ve included a basic description for each of these scents or smells to help you select the right type for your bedroom.

There’s a large variety of scents at your disposal, and you are not limited to just one.

Some days I use a fresh spearmint scent in my bedroom; other days I use a cherry blossom scent. When I’m in the mood to feel relaxed and luxurious, I use a relaxing vanilla, and it works wonders on me.

Once you start dabbling with this stuff, there’s no turning back, and you’ll fall in love with it.

Buy These Things To Improve The Scent Of Your Bedroom

air purifier for bedroom, make your bedroom smell good

1. Air purifier

Yes, I’m recommending that you buy an air purifier, and I can attest that it is not a gimmick. In fact, there was a time when one of our cats had an infection, and he was giving off an odor that was hard to ignore.

Until the antibiotics worked, we couldn’t really bathe him or anything like that. So, on the off chance that it works, I picked up an air purifier and ran it in the room.

After about two or three hours, when I went back into the room to check up on him, I was shocked!

The bad smell was nowhere to be found, all thanks to my cheap air purifier.

Now I use it in my room to make sure that the air quality is good and that bad smells are dispelled.

If you have issues with your sinuses, I strongly recommend a good air purifier.

I recommend this air purifier by LEVOIT on Amazon. It’s a bestseller with over 19 thousand positive reviews, and it’s priced competitively.

2. Diffusers

I’ll be honest and admit that I never heard of a diffuser until 2014. I don’t know whether I lived under a rock or something, but I really had no idea something like this even existed.

A diffuser is a device that emits or disperses essential oils or perfume using reeds, a fan, mist, air pressure, or even heat.

There are electronic diffusers that do the work for you, and there are also simpler diffusers that use a reed, which slowly absorbs and releases a scent into the air.

Both work, but I prefer a diffuser device that can be refilled and plugged in to work throughout the day.

3. Scented candles

They may not be the most pungent item on this list, but scented candles continue to be a popular choice for making a bedroom smell good.

They’re romantic, relaxing, brightening, and well-scented.

For health enthusiasts, you can find candles that are free of chemical products. These types of candles are more expensive, but they use essential oils for their unique and fresh scent.

I prefer natural products ever since I’ve become conscious of my health.

4. Houseplants and indoor flowers

Indoor plants are a great way to add color and clean air to your bedroom.

Flowers, on the other hand, serve a similar purpose but are more effective at adding a subtle but fresh floral scent to your room.

I tried succulents; they didn’t make much of a difference.

What worked for my bedroom was jasmine, lavender, mint, eucalyptus, and lemon balm. Since most essential oils are extracted from these plants, it makes sense that they would clean and enhance the scent of a room.

5. Humidifier

I live in a tropical climate, and the weather is incredibly unpredictable. Sometimes, on the hottest and driest of days, I use a humidifier to increase moisture in the air.

But I’m naughty, so I add a drop or two of mint essential oil.

Shockingly, my humidifier hasn’t been damaged by this, but I also love how it changes the smell in my bedroom within a minute or two.

Be sure to check out the video I recorded and included above of the humidifier I use in my bedroom.
