Can Bedrooms Have Different Flooring? (Answered)

It is a well-established fact that the type of flooring you install in a home has to be cohesive and uniform to create a natural flow. This allows the space to appear larger, cleaner, and intentional. But, it can be quite underwhelming and monotonous. Most of us want to inject a bit of personality and character into our bedrooms. Typically, we play around with different wall colors, accessories, bedding, and/or wall art. But, in some cases, the bedroom flooring can be an area worth looking into. This begs the question, can bedrooms have different flooring?

Yes, in a lot of cases, bedrooms can have different flooring provided that you have enough space to create zones and you match the different types of flooring with each other. They should be of a similar color or a complementary color and separated seamlessly to create zones that are intentional rather than haphazard or mismatched.

There are a few things to consider before deviating from one type of flooring in your home. Ironically, the home I grew up in had different flooring in the bedrooms. The mistake we made was using a different type of flooring in each bedroom.

One bedroom had carpet, another had vinyl tile, and the other had laminated flooring. Each room had a drastically different feel to it due to the diversity of flooring used in each bedroom but from the outside, it appeared cluttered and incohesive.

What this taught me was that if you are looking to use different floorings in the bedrooms compared to the rest of the home, at least match the flooring used within the bedroom. If they’re not of the same finish, let them be of the same type of flooring.

I will also admit that if you live in a relatively small space, it just looks better to use the same flooring in the bedrooms. A cohesive flowing floor makes a space look bigger or larger than it really is.

But, if that isn’t an issue for you, then you can have different flooring in the bedrooms.

Reasons To Use Different Flooring In Bedrooms

1. It creates personalized spaces

Different flooring in bedrooms eliminates the possibility of creating a clinical appearance in your home.

A deviation in the type and style of bedroom floors allows each space to reflect the preferences and tastes of the person who stays in that room.

It provides more freedom to experiment with different decor options, wall colors, accessories, and fittings that may not have been suitable or complementary to the primary floors of your home.

2. It can be more comfortable or functional

There are certain types of flooring that offer more resilience and resistance to damage and dirt compared to others.

If you were to lean towards porcelain tiles, you wouldn’t have to worry about water damage plus you could easily clean the floors by sweeping rather than having to vacuum or scrub them clean.

In some cases, you could opt for more comfort over function by installing carpets in the bedroom which are known to provide more warmth and softness to a floor at the cost of functionality and convenience for cleaning.

3. It creates zones within a home

My mother used to run a little home business and one of the ways in which she would create a professional setting for clients was by transforming one of the rooms into a more functional and simple space.

The floors she chose were all about functionality over color and feel. It was clean, simple, and professional compared to the rest of the floors in our home.

You could do the same thing by using different flooring in the bedroom compared to the rest of your home.

4. It can provide more flexibility in design

It is true that your flooring can limit the type of options you have for the decor in your home. Some floors look amazing for the lounge, kitchen, passage, and dining room but not so much for the bedrooms.

If you want to have more freedom for color, quirkiness, and style in your bedrooms, it would make sense to use different flooring.

Have a theme in mind for the bedrooms and choose a flooring type that aligns with those goals.

If you do it correctly, there’s no reason why you can’t design the bedroom of your dreams.

Things To Consider When Using Different Flooring In Bedrooms

1. Create a seamless transition between the different flooring

To avoid a jarring transition between floors in your home, you should invest in transition strips. They are designed for the express purpose of connecting different types of flooring in a smooth and seamless manner.

There are different types of materials used for the transition strips and they can appear in different styles.

As long as you choose one type and style that can be used between the bedroom flooring and the primary flooring, it ought to look professionally done and tidy.

2. Don’t use too many different types of flooring

It’s okay to use different flooring for the bedrooms as long as the type of flooring is the same within the bedrooms.

Don’t deviate so much that there’s absolutely no cohesiveness between the bedrooms and the rest of your home.

It just cheapens the overall appearance of your home and can create unnecessary problems in regard to cleaning and maintenance.

If you have wooden floors all over your home but want something different for your bedroom, try carpet. The design and appearance of the carpet don’t have to be the same in all the bedrooms if you take this approach.

This way, you have more freedom and flexibility in the design without compromising cohesiveness in any way.

3. Choose floors that are easy to maintain and clean

I’ll be honest, I prefer convenience over comfort when it comes to floors. I’ve had enough time cleaning my home to know that the inconvenience of cleaning certain types of flooring far outweighs the comfort they provide.

Tiles tend to be the best option, especially if they have a smooth or matte finish without many textural features.

You could wipe, sweep, or dust these floors quickly to keep them clean. More importantly, you can remove stains and spills from tiles with ease and without causing any permanent damage to the floor.

That’s not necessarily the case with carpet or wood floors because they are more prone to damage due to their porous nature.

Final Thoughts

There you have it. If you follow the advice that I have carefully laid out for your above, you should be able to use different flooring in the bedrooms.

It’s your home and you should be able to design it the way that best suits your needs and preferences.

But, at the same time, it’s always a good idea to spare some consideration toward creating a design and style that has some form of intentionality to it and cohesiveness. This is what most interior decorators strive for, even when they decorate and style certain areas of a home differently than the rest.
