20 Things To Do At The Beginning Of The Month

what to do at the beginning of the month, to do list

The start of a new month is the perfect opportunity to hit refresh on your goals, habits, and mindset. I know that most of us don’t want our lives to consist solely of work. But, actioning our high-priority objectives safeguards our financial future, well-being, and growth in vital areas of life.

I hate the feeling of stagnancy. It breeds insecurity and anxiety within me. If I’m not working towards goals or progressing in some way, I often feel like I’ve wasted a month of my life. Granted, we will face setbacks in life that are sometimes triggered by events outside of our control, but I like to look at that as a separate phenomenon.

When we can exercise control over a particular area of our life, we should. Not just for the sake of being productive but for personal pride and self-respect.

If anyone deserves your best efforts, it’s you.

That being said, I think the following things to do at the beginning of the month will ensure that you remain productive, financially secure, strategic, and balanced.

What To Do At The Start Of A New Month

what to do at the beginning of the month

1. Review The Past Month

Growth comes from action and analysis. Take 15 minutes to reflect on what went well and what didn’t. Note achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. This gives you clarity and momentum moving forward. Through this analysis, you should be able to maintain, change, or remove activities from your daily to-do list.

2. Set Monthly Goals

If you often battle with feeling lost in life, you must always be working toward a goal or objective. Purpose provides an enormous amount of relief from depression and anxiety. Break your yearly or quarterly goals into bite-sized monthly actions. Keep them SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Get a journal and start tracking all your important goals and habits. It will keep you accountable and driven to be productive.

3. Update Your Calendar

Add all important dates—appointments, bills, birthdays, deadlines, events—so you’re never caught off guard. Time is your most valuable resource, and if you aren’t managing your calendar with intentionality, start right now.

4. Create A Monthly Budget

Without proper budgeting, you will blow through your income every single month. I see this occurring with most people who work for an honest living. You might not have a lot of money to save, but every dollar that you do save puts you in a better position than the person who doesn’t save anything. Track your income and planned expenses. Set spending limits and review your savings goals to stay financially stable.

5. Do A Digital Declutter

Delete unused apps, organize your files, and clear out your email inbox. A tidy digital space reduces mental clutter. The less time you waste on your phone, the more time you can spend with family and friends, on your hobbies, and on your physical health.

6. Meal Plan For The Week Ahead

As someone who is incredibly prone to gaining weight, I have to meal plan or else I will indulge in my cravings all the time. Your health is a non-negotiable priority, and what you consume directly affects your health. Plan 3–5 healthy meals you can prep or rotate during the week. This saves money, reduces stress, and supports your fitness goals.

7. Grocery Shop With Intention

Stock your kitchen with nutritious foods. Avoid impulse buys by making a list and sticking to it. Purchasing in bulk can often prove to be cheaper than buying individual items. Shopping on specific days when sales are on can save you money. Most importantly, avoiding processed fast foods can save years of your life.

8. Declutter One Area Of Your Home

An untidy and cluttered environment is a breeding ground for stress and roaches. Tackle your closet, junk drawer, or workspace. A clean, clutter-free environment supports mental clarity and productivity. Declutter at the beginning of the month, and you’ll only need to maintain it once per week for a short period of time.

9. Review And Refill Subscriptions

Check your memberships (gym, streaming, meal kits, etc.). Cancel anything you no longer use and refill anything running low. If you haven’t used something more than 3–5 times in the last month, it might be time to cancel your subscription and save the money. Alternatively, use the money for something better.

10. Clean Your Home

Do a deep clean or schedule tasks throughout the week—cleaning boosts mental clarity, reduces stress, and creates a calm space.

11. Schedule Workouts

Plan your fitness routine for the month—book classes, block time in your calendar, or start a new challenge. I work a very sedentary job, and if I don’t plan my daily walks, I’ll often sit the entire day without getting more than 1000 steps of movement. Remember, anything less than 5000 steps per day is considered sedentary, so you must walk for at least an hour per day.

12. Clean & Service Your Car

A deep clean of the interior is strongly recommended at this time. Topping up on engine oil might be useful. Change the water or use an engine coolant/cleaner. Check your spark plugs and brake fluid. Fill air in the tires and wax the exterior.

13. Check Your Credit Score & Bank Statements

Stay on top of your financial health and spot any errors or suspicious activity early. Avoid falling into arrears and start paying off smaller loans/debts if possible.

14. Do A Social Media Audit

Unfollow accounts that drain you. Follow people who inspire, educate, or uplift you instead. What you consume digitally does affect how you think and what you think. I carefully curate my social media accounts so that I’m mostly exposed to creators/people who inspire me.

15. Schedule “Me Time”

Book days or hours for rest, hobbies, or doing absolutely nothing. You don’t need to earn your rest—plan for it. Make an event out of it. When I take a day off, I build the hype and anticipation. It keeps morale up and makes life more enjoyable.

16. Start A 30-Day Challenge

Commit to one challenge (e.g., daily meditation, walking 10K steps, or journaling) that supports your mental or physical health. I like adventures, and I want to experience new things that help me gain confidence. 30-day challenges add some excitement to my life and a chance for me to experience something different every month.

17. Wash Your Sheets & Towels

Clean bedding and towels give your space a fresh, clean start—and improve sleep hygiene too. Anyone who has lived with acne knows the importance of changing bedding every month. At the very least, give them a good, deep wash.

18. Organize Your Workspace

Whether at home or the office, clear your desk, refill supplies, and make your workspace inviting. It’s always motivating to look at a desk that has been cleaned, organized, and restocked for the month ahead.

19. Read A New Book Or Get A New Certification

I’m always looking to improve my CV and to give myself a chance to gain new career opportunities. There are many short certifications available online that could be worth completing each month. Choose one at the beginning of the month and partake in it until you achieve great results. Alternatively, find a new book that can help you elevate the way you live or work. Learn as much as possible, and you will conquer all forms of challenges thrown your way.

20. Practice Gratitude

Write down 3–5 things you’re grateful for as you step into the new month. Gratitude builds happiness and emotional resilience. We’re not trying to speed through life or our objectives. We want to live fully and take into account all the good things that happened before, which can set the tone for how you feel during this upcoming month of your life.

I had a lot of fun writing this article because it reminded me of the things that make me the happiest, most productive, and healthiest version of myself.
