My mother always says that a messy environment reflects a messy mind. I feel like that is true. Although some people can function creatively in a disorganized environment, I believe most of us would benefit from a home office desk that is organized, clean, and clutter-free.
I love notebooks and stationery, so it can be challenging to keep my desk free of unessential items. However, with time and intentionality, I’ve discovered some tips to stay organized, and at the same time, I’ve found many great items that aid in this process.
Here’s a list of everything you can try or purchase to declutter and organize your home office desk.

1. Use A Desk Tray For Daily Essential Items

I have made it a rule to keep only today’s essentials on my desk. A slim desk tray can be used to store items that are needed for your daily work. By doing this, you’re always staying organized and avoiding excessive piles on your desk.
2. Invest In A Vertical File Organizer

Vertical organizers save space and keep folders, notebooks, and mail upright and visible. This is perfect if you hate digging through stacks of things scattered around your desk. They’re relatively affordable and made with materials that are cohesive for any room decor.
3. Keep A Pen Holder (But Limit It)

A pen holder is a must, but don’t turn it into storage overflow. Keep only your 5–7 most-used pens and tools. I have committed myself to finishing items before investing in more. Whether it be food in my fridge or stationery on my desk. It breaks the addiction to materialism by only buying things when you run out or supplies run very low.
4. Add A Drawer Organizer
Desk drawers get messy fast. Use small compartments to separate stationery, chargers, sticky notes, and clips so everything has a home.
5. Use A Cable Management Box

Hide power strips and tangled cords in a cable box to instantly make your desk look cleaner and more intentional. I have both a desktop PC and my work laptop on my desk that is attached to a docking station. It’s safe to say that I have quite a lot of cables running around the place, and that can be unsightly. Cable management boxes or ties can be a cheap way of organizing your cables and tidying up the space.
6. Clip Notes With A Desk Memo Holder

Instead of scattered sticky notes, use a small memo clip or get a bound sticky note pack to keep reminders visible without visual clutter.
7. Store Supplies In A Small Caddy

A desk caddy keeps essentials like scissors, highlighters, and correction tape grouped. It’s easy to move when cleaning and can be cleaned with minimal effort.
8. Keep A Minimal Desk Lamp

Choose a lamp with a small footprint and built-in storage or USB charging if possible. Less bulk = more usable space. Alternatively, opt for a lamp that has adjustable brightness so that it creates a different mood depending on the time of day it’s being used.
9. Use A Monitor Stand With Storage

Monitor stands lift your screen to eye level and often include drawers or shelves underneath for notebooks and accessories. I purchased a plastic stand with a little notebook section. I slide my keyboard and mouse inside the stand and any notebooks or sticky notes into the floating compartment.
10. Create A “Reset Zone”
Designate one small area for items you’re not sure where to put yet. Clear it weekly to avoid clutter creep. You could use a wire or plastic basket to store miscellaneous items for organizing over the weekend.
11. Use A Catch-All Tray
A small tray for keys, glasses, or earbuds prevents random items from spreading across your desk.
12. Keep A Desk Calendar Or Planner Stand

Instead of loose planners, a standing desk calendar or vertical planner keeps dates visible without taking up much space.
13. Go Digital Where Possible
Scan important documents and reduce paper clutter. Fewer physical items = easier organization. I would advise you to invest in a physical scanner, but nowadays, you could just use your phone to take a picture and convert the document into a scanned PDF.
14. Add One Functional Decorative Item

A plant, photo frame, or small clock adds personality without sacrificing order. Just keep it intentional and minimal.
15. End Each Day With A 2-Minute Tidy
The simplest tip of all: return items to their spots before logging off. Tomorrow, you will thank yourself for making a small effort to keep your environment and home office desk clean.
