10 Valuable Items You Should Always Buy At The Thrift Store

  • Zak

Thrift stores are full of hidden gems, and I am addicted to finding good deals. Most of my tech equipment and exercise equipment at home was purchased pre-owned. My desk organizer, washing basket, and light fixtures were also from thrift stores. If you know what to look for, thrift stores can be full of valuable items for your home.

While not everything on the racks is a bargain, certain items consistently offer incredible value when bought secondhand. From high-quality materials to timeless pieces that age well, these are the things worth buying at the thrift store every time.

Here’s a list of what I think are valuable items worth buying at thrift stores without much of a second thought.

1. Solid Wood Furniture

Solid wood furniture is one of the biggest wins at thrift stores. Older pieces are often better made than modern flat-pack furniture, using real wood instead of particleboard. They will last forever and can be refurbished. Even after refurbishing, you’ll still spend less than if you purchased solid wood furniture brand new.

Why it’s valuable:

  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Can be refinished or painted
  • Costs a fraction of new prices

Look for dressers, side tables, dining chairs, and bookshelves with sturdy construction.

2. High-Quality Cookware

Cast iron, stainless steel, and enamel-coated cookware often end up in thrift stores, barely used. These materials are built to last decades.

Best finds include:

  • Cast iron skillets
  • Heavy-bottomed pots
  • Dutch ovens

Avoid non-stick pans with scratched surfaces. On the plus side, cast iron is said to be a less toxic and far more eco-friendly option to cook with, so I would encourage you to invest in it if you find one on sale at a thrift store.

3. Glassware And Serving Dishes

Thrift stores are treasure troves for glassware. You’ll often find beautiful sets and unique pieces for entertaining.

What to look for:

  • Crystal or thick glass
  • Vintage patterns
  • Matching sets or statement pieces

These items are usually far more expensive when bought new.

4. Books

Books are one of the best-value thrift store purchases. From cookbooks to coffee-table books, secondhand copies often cost pennies.

Bonus:

  • Hardcovers are especially good value
  • Older editions can have better printing and binding

I like to pick up used books to be my companion for any sort of trip or commute. Since they’re so cheap, I don’t have an issue marking up the texts if need be, and if they get lost, it’s not a blow to my wallet.

5. Picture Frames

Frames can be surprisingly expensive when bought new. Thrift stores offer a wide variety of sizes, materials, and styles.

Tip: Buy frames for the frame itself since that’s the most likely to be of use unless you stumble upon a magnificent painting that could someday be worth millions.

6. Clothing Made From Natural Fibers

Thrift stores are ideal for finding quality clothing made from wool, linen, silk, and cotton. These are fabrics that wear well and last longer. I understand that not everyone is comfortable using pre-owned clothing, but this was a feature in my life as a kid (at times), so I’m not too opposed to this. I especially love to grab jackets since they are the least offensive items to purchase used.

What to check:

  • Labels and fabric content
  • Stitching and seams
  • Signs of wear or damage

Focus on timeless styles rather than trends.

7. Kitchen Tools and Utensils

Many kitchen tools don’t wear out quickly and are safe to buy secondhand. I picked up an ice cream maker for 20% of the cost of a new one! It was in fantastic condition with barely any signs of blemishes. But, in general, daily kitchen tools and utensils are a safe bet.

Great thrifted finds:

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking pans
  • Measuring cups
  • Rolling pins
  • Certain machines (avoid cheap juicers and blenders because the motors don’t last, or the containers tend to break over time)

Skip anything with cracks, rust, or missing parts.

8. Lamps And Light Fixtures

Lighting can dramatically change a space, and thrift stores often have unique lamps you won’t find anywhere else. Recently, I wanted to replace my ceiling fan with a nice light fixture, and the prices of new ones were appalling!

Why they’re worth it:

  • Easy to rewire or update with a new shade
  • Often made from heavier, higher-quality materials

Always test electrical items before buying.

9. Baskets And Storage Containers

Woven baskets, metal bins, and storage boxes are often overpriced when new but abundant at thrift stores.

Uses include:

  • Organizing shelves and closets
  • Stylish storage for blankets or toys
  • Pantry organization

As long as you don’t see any massive holes or fraying, you’re in the clear to invest in these at low prices.

10. Home Decor With Patina

Items with character often shine secondhand. Think ceramic vases, brass accents, mirrors, and art pieces.

Why thrift wins here:

  • Unique, one-of-a-kind finds
  • Better craftsmanship
  • Adds warmth and personality to your home

Tips For Thrift Store Success

As a rule of thumb, these are some of the tips I utilize to make the best purchases whenever I visit thrift stores:

  • Inspect items carefully for damage.
  • Check return policies.
  • Visit often since inventory changes constantly.
  • Keep a short list of what you’re hunting for.

Final Thoughts

Buying secondhand isn’t just about saving money. On the contrary, it’s about intentionality. Thrift stores offer durable, timeless, and often higher-quality items than many new alternatives. With a little patience and a sharp eye, you can furnish your home and wardrobe with pieces that last for years and save a ton of money in the process.
