10 Small Purchases That Improved The Appearance Of My Home

  • Zak

I love decorating homes. If I had the freedom to pursue interior design and decorating as a full-time job, I would jump at it in a heartbeat. But I work a regular 9-to-5 job, and I like to blog and write at night.

One day, I hope to be successful enough to buy more than one property and decorate it to my heart’s content.

But, until then, I have to be extremely modest with my spending while still indulging in home improvement and design.

I’ve gotten good at changing the appearance of a room with very little money, and it all boils down to making small purchases that make a big impact.

I want to share a list of home decor items that cost less than 15 bucks but look good in a home.

10 Affordable Items That Will Improve Your Home Decor

1. Succulents and cacti

Succulents and cacti are some of the cheapest and easiest to care for indoor plants. They’re extremely resilient and require very little maintenance to look good. As they grow, you can break some off and transplant them into different pots to expand your collection. The ever-changing nature of indoor plants will always alter the appearance of your home, even by a little, and that’s worth the investment. To start, I recommend buying Aloe Vera and placing them near a kitchen window, home office desk, or bathroom window.

2. Lamp fixtures

Lamp fixtures and lights change the way a room looks. This is emphasized by the light distribution and the shape, which can drastically improve the appearance of your home. Clean white light creates a neutral and upbeat appearance, while warm white creates a relaxing and golden ambiance.

3. Stylish throw pillowcases

Throw pillows are used on beds, couches, and chairs. Rather than buying new ones all the time, you could invest in some colorful or fashionable cases and replace them according to the different seasons of the year. If you are great at sewing, then I would recommend saving even more money by purchasing materials and sewing them yourself. My sister tends to combine scrap fabrics to design throw pillowcases that are unique and artistic.

4. Bedroom rugs

Sometimes, ceramic floors are boring, especially if the wall colors are the same. To add some color, depth, and variety of texture to the floors, try investing in small rugs that can be placed at the entrance of a doorway or beside your bed. Choose colors that either complement or contrast the rest of the room decor.

5. Printed artwork

Authentic artwork is expensive, but with the advancement of technology, it’s getting harder to decipher between printed artwork and painted artwork. I was walking through a local home decor store and caught a glimpse of a beautiful printed piece in a frame that wasn’t even more than 10 bucks! Find or order prints that will enhance the overall aesthetic appeal of your home and install them on the wall in front of your bed, behind an office desk, and in passageways.

6. Figurines

If you’re a fan of comic books or franchises, have you considered displaying your favorite collectibles? Chances are such that you’ll have people over who appreciate them as much as you do, and they can serve as a feature piece in a room.

7. Floating shelves with books

Even if you’re not much of a bookworm, they tend to add some character and personality to a home, especially when they are displayed stylishly. Floating shelves are quite cheap and easy to install, so why not try installing one near your home office desk or the corner of your lounge to display some classic titles?

8. Curtains and blinds

Change your curtains and blinds when they begin to discolor or fade from time and use. Every couple of years, there are trends in colors and materials that affect the appearance of curtains. I would recommend finding a current style that would uplift the appearance of your room. It shouldn’t be too expensive if you opt for cheaper fabrics or synthetic materials.

9. Fancy diffusers

I did some rummaging through Amazon recently, and I came across some of the most awesome light-up, colorful, and uniquely designed diffusers for an affordable price, including essential oils for a variety of scents. Place them on a lounge table, on the bedside table, or on a home office desk to add a decorative piece that also improves the scent of the room.

10. Cable organizers

I have an insane amount of electronic devices all over my home, and not all of them are wireless. It can appear quite unattractive when you have black cords all over the place, which is why I recommend investing in cable organizers that can conceal them attractively. It may not add much to the overall appearance of your home, but it certainly minimizes the appearance of an unsightly feature.

Bonus Mentions:

Here are a few more affordable home decor items you could get:

  • Clay or porcelain vases for flowers.
  • Vintage chess board as a display piece for a coffee table.
  • Uniquely shaped mirrors with a gold, silver, or bronze frame.
  • Ceiling light fixtures that are vintage, retro, or industrial.

To wrap things up, I’m pretty certain that if you were to pick up a handful of items from this list, you’d be able to decorate and improve the appearance of your home in a noticeable manner. It definitely won’t break the bank, and you’ll enjoy a lot of these decorative items.
